The Eixample is one of the new neighborhoods of Barcelona whose origin dates back to the XIX century, in a time when the capital of Catalunya was growing in population and expanding its industrial power. After bringing down the medieval walls, the central government approved the urban plan designed by engineer Ildefons Cerda which foresaw the plan of an ´equal city¨ – where there´s no differentiation of neighborhoods and same services are provided in every corner. Completed at the beginning of the XX century, the newest neighborhood of Barcelona, began to be known as the Modernist Eixample because it used new techniques and advanced materials combining them with traditional decorative methods. The work of craftsmen was at the service for the modern architects for a new concept of space in harmony with creative freedom. Major works and attraction of the neighborhood are the Passeo de Gracia avenue, Gaudi´s Casa Milla , Casa Batllo and the emblematic Sagrada Familia church. Famous architects that also contributed building the Eixample are Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Antoni Gaudí etc.
